Following is an e-mail that I sent to Karen Bass, U.S. Congressional Representative for the 37th District, in Los Angeles (my district), in response to e-newsletter that I received from Rep. Bass on December 5, 2014:
Dear Rep. Bass and Staff:
Thank you for your update.
I would like to offer a few comments:
1. While you fight efforts to repeal Obamacare, I will fight to overturn the ACA in its entirety. While some previously uncovered individuals may now have some form of health insurance (not to be confused with "health care"), I and other tax payers in the 37th District are subsidizing that health insurance. Also, many people who previously could not "afford" health insurance, simply were not willing to make the necessary budgeting decisions and lifestyle choices to pay for insurance. Perhaps, these people chose to purchase expensive mobile phones and chrome hub caps instead. You may adopt whatever "narrative" you like, however, I will stick with facts.
2. Regarding your e-mail update headline: President Obama announces Immigration Executive Action to protect families. Please allow me to clarify the situation (my italics):
President Obama announces Immigration Executive Action to protect illegal aliens, many of whom are adults who entered and/or remain in the U.S. illegally, at the expense of legal U.S. residents; especially, African Americans in the 37th District, who experience higher rates of unemployment than the U.S. population as a whole.
My revised statement does not hide the truth, which your original statement hides by omission. Again, you allow the "narrative" to overrun the facts.
Rep. Bass and Staff: You may have decent intentions, to the extent you even understand the detailed implications of the policies you support, however, you do not communicate with candor. You mistake or misuse the "narrative," in place of objective truth. Your spreading of the "narrative," instead of facts, is corrosive to the body politic.
